This is the industry standard, highest performance spectrum analyzer that HP - Agilent made. The frequency range is 100 Hz to 22 GHz and the capability of going up to 325 GHz with external mixers(not included). The excellent frequency stability allows measurements with a 10 Hz resolution bandwidth. Amplitude range is -134 to +30 dBm. The 8566B also has internal storage of user-defined routines to speed your test procedures. Plotters, printers, signal generators and power meters can be controlled by the 8566B with used-defined softkeys. The 8566B is fully HP-IB progammable and has direct plot capability.

The 85685A RF Preselector makes a multi-purpose test receiver of an 8566B, 8567A, or 8568B Spectrum Analyzer. In addition to an instrument for general-purpose spectrum analysis, you now have a test receiver for specialized applications. The RF preselector, with tracking filters and preamplifiers covering the 20Hz to 2GHz range, improves spectrum analyzer measurement sensitivity while providing overload protection from out-of-band signals. The resulting test receiver system operating in the presence of high-level interference has a measurement range 30 dB greater than that of a spectrum analyzer alone.... This Analyzer works on the principle of “super heterodyne receiver” to convert higher frequencies (normally ranging up to several 10s of GHz) to measurable quantities. The received frequency spectrum is slowly swept through a range of pre selected frequencies, converting the selected frequency to a measurable DC level (usually logarithmic scale), and displaying the same on the CRT of the Agilent 85685A. The CRT displays received signal strength (y axis) against frequency (x axis).

Some applications for Agilent 85685A Spectrum Analyzers include Site monitoring Verify that the frequency and signal strength of your transmitter is accurate. Interference before a system is installed you use a Agilent 85685A spectrum analyzer to verify that the frequencies are not occupied or if the presence of a very strong signal will interfere with your new setup.
